Japan tax-free & yen converter

Before shopping in a store in Japan, estimate whether your purchase is tax-free and roughly how much comes back, and convert yen to other currencies. Results are estimates; the shop and customs decide.

Tax-free estimate

Purchases up to 31 October 2026 follow the current system (general goods and consumables counted separately; consumables capped at ¥500,000). Ask the shop for details.

From 1 November 2026: purchases of ¥5,000 or more before tax at the same shop on the same day qualify, with no split between general goods and consumables and no upper limit. You pay the tax-included price, and after customs confirms the goods when you leave Japan (within 90 days of purchase), the shop refunds the consumption tax. A fee may apply.

Only for in-store purchases at tax-free shops. Online purchases (including Rakuten) are not tax-free.
